Discernment: Overcoming Rather than Coming Under…
“Whoever is wise, let him understand these things; Whoever is discerning, let him know them For the ways of the LORD are right, And the righteous will walk in them, But transgressors will stumble in them.” Hosea 14:9
Recently the Lord has been teaching me about discernment. Discernment is a valuable gift from the Lord. We all have a certain level of discernment, but as we grow in our relationships with the Lord our discernment will often become more active. Discernment of Spirits is being able to understand something that is going on in the spiritual realm without having any direct knowledge. This tool can be very useful when trying to make decisions, or even if you are praying for someone.
My personal experience with discernment was a bit confusing at first. I really wasn’t sure what was going on at first when I would begin discerning. I honestly felt a little crazy at times. I would feel fine one moment then I would walk up to someone and get this weird feeling. I would begin to wonder what was wrong with me? There was one morning I was at home and looked up someone who was coming to a conference up online to find out more information on this individual. As soon as I saw this person I instantly disliked myself. I had no reason to feel this way, this was not a normal feeling for me.. After dealing with eating disorders for fifteen years I thought it was just me being jealous, or disliking this person for some reason. So I prayed asked for forgiveness, and asked for revelation for this person. I went into the kitchen to make some coffee, and the Holy Spirit began speaking to me and said “you were discerning.” I was a bit taken back, but then I asked the Lord so what should I do? He said, pray for the person, but don’t come under it. I wasn’t sure what He mean’t at first when He said don’t come under it.
A few weeks later it happened again this time I was in a room full of people. I sat down for a moment, and prayed. I took authority over my thoughts, and feelings. I told the devil he had to go from me, and repented for feeling such a way. When I got up the feeling was gone. A week later I was talking with a friend who had happened to be there in the same room at the same time. She said she felt the same thing as I did. I realized then that it wasn’t just me, it was coming from someone, or something else. The Lord began explaining to me that when I feel this way I am actually discerning, and instead of coming under the feeling, I needed to come over it. I did something right I took authority over it and shifted the atmosphere in the room.
A big key to discernment is when we realize it doesn’t have anything to do us it’s a discernment of spirits and we are not to not take it on. We are discerning a spirit attached to someone, or something. The enemy wants us to think it is us, but we must remember that is not us, and to take authority over it. When we run into this situation and we know that it isn’t us because we were not feeling this way before we came in contact with it, we need to make sure we don’t come under it by taking it on. We have the authority of Jesus Christ in us as Christ followers to pray, take authority over it, and change the atmosphere.
Another way this can happen is if we are fine, and someone we begin talking to is upset about something. We may start to come under the spirit that is causing this person to be upset because we may begin to feel and take on whatever that person is putting off. We have to remember that an offended or angry spirit is not of God. We can not take it on, and come under the spirit leading the other person. This is another reason to put on the full armor of God because our fight is never against flesh and blood, but against rulers, against authorities, against powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms Ephesians 6:12. There is something about having compassion for someone, but we must be careful not to take their on their personal offense.
I want to encourage you to begin asking God to strengthen your discernment and teach you how to not come under it, but to overcome it. Maybe you haven’t thought a whole lot about discernment? Perhaps you have a keen gift of discernment, and you didn’t understand why you felt constantly swayed from one moment to the next. Ask the Lord to increase your discernment and knowing what spirit are you dealing with, He will lead you and direct you. Ask him to purify your heart so that you may discern correctly in every situation, and remember you have authority to not come under, but to overcome!
